Leadership and Management

This lecture will consider such questions as:

• What is a leader?
• What are the traits of a leader?
• What are the behaviours of a leader?
• Are great leaders born or made?
• What is the difference between a leader and a manager?

The lecture will cover the main theories of leadership and the practical application of them. It will look at the differences between transactional and transformational leadership and review leadership styles, including autocratic leadership and democratic leadership.

The main leadership theories will be discussed including contingency theories of leadership and the Herschey Blanchard Situational Leadership Theory.  Finally, the lecture will examine the question ‘How can I become a better leader?’

John Doris B.Sc., M.B.A., F.C.C.A.
John Doris is principal of Meridian Business Advisors Limited and is a non-executive director of a number of companies. He graduated from University College Dublin with a B.Sc. in physics and completed his M.B.A. there in 1977. He qualified as an ACCA in 1974 and he has worked in a number of organisations in senior financial and management roles. He has experienced many different styles of leadership and management and as a result he developed an interest in the topic.
