Topic:
In recent years there has been major changes in the expectations of internal audit departments and boards and management are demanding more from the function. In response, internal audit departments are changing their approaches, in some cases significantly, to meet their evolving mandates. There is no doubt that the range and nature of audit activity being performed within companies has changed with increased demand for far more advisory support on strategic initiatives and a drive for broader and deeper audit coverage delivered using more efficient internal audit techniques. Globally, part of the reason for a change in expectations is related to the fact that during the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) in 2002, many traditional internal audit activities were pushed aside as internal audit staff were redeployed to help their companies comply with the vast documentation and testing of internal controls required under Section 404. This left many global organisations internal audit functions overwhelmed with SOX related compliance activities with very limited capability to cover the many other key risks in the business. With SOX largely under control many global internal audit functions are now free to focus on a broader mandate are looking for ways to innovate and contribute better to the corporate agenda.
