Business Leaders Forum Breakfast with Josephine Feehily, The Policing Authority
Josephine Feehily, is the Chairperson of the new independent Policing Authority established by the Government as part of a suite of reform measures in the Justice sector. The Authority, whose role is to oversee the performance of the Garda Síochána of its policing functions, started its work on 01 January 2016. It has recently put in place a Code of Ethics for the Garda Síochána and has now been given responsibility for making promotions to senior Garda ranks.
Previously, Josephine was a career civil servant for some 41 years until her retirement at the end of January 2015 from the position as Chairman of the Office of the Revenue Commissioners – the Irish Tax and Customs Authority – a position she held since 2008. She was one of the three Commissioners who form the Board of Revenue since 1998, the first woman to hold that position in Ireland.
For three years, from June 2011, Josephine was elected to Chair the World Customs Organisation – an organisation of 180 member countries who are responsible for managing more than 98% of global trade. From November 2012, she was selected by her peers to Chair the OECD Forum for Tax Administration – a forum of leaders of advanced Tax Authorities – at a time of significant international debate about global tax matters.
Josephine is a graduate of the National College of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. In 2016, Josephine was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Limerick in recognition of her career in public service.
